Trying to enrol... and Alegria!
Argh trying to enrol has been totally crazy, but I think I have things sorted now.
The subjects I am probably doing are:
Radio Features (it's kind of like the subject I did last semester lol except the features are longer and they use a different editing software, so what the hell thought I may as well do it for fun)
Media Events (I will just copy paste the info about each subject now lol)
The module will study the nature of public events and the impact upon them of the media. The course will explore how events are transformed into media events and how they are understood by audiences. The approach will be partly historical and partly textual. It will focus on the meaning of media events such as news, sport, royal ceremonies, and studio talk / game shows and examine how they are constructed.
Political Economy of the Mass Media
By the end of the course, students should be familiar with the major economic features of the different cultural and communication industries. They should understand how economic forces shape the production, distribution and consumption of media.
They should be aware of the differing major approaches to economic concepts to analyse the media. In essence they should be aware of the differing major changes.
Cultural Journalism
Techniques and practices of arts and cultural journalism including reviewing various forms of artistic products including live performances, recording performances, gallery events etc.
Some of the theory subjects sound pretty dense, but apparently they are fairly interesting.
Um basically all I have been doing is organizing enrolment the past few days.
On Thursday I went to Windsor Castle though with another Aussie exchange student and that was fun. It was a pretty amazing building... except the Queen's state apartments were closed!! Argh! They only close a couple of weeks in the year, trust it to be when I choose to go there.
On Friday I had more orientation stuff, but we had this big party in our hall on Friday night because these guys had come back from Russia and bought back all this proper Russian vodka duty free... so I got very tanked. It was funny. There was also heaps of food, and at one stage I was making people Vegemite sandwiches... hmmm. These other few girls that I live with and I got dragged to this Korean guy's apartment and he wanted us to dance and the music was so so bad... it was so hard for us to escape... but the whole situation was funny at the same time.
On Saturday, I was hungover. So of course my mother called from Australia at 7am!!!! Argh.. she screwed up the timezone conversion. I went to Portobello Road markets which were pretty cool- loads of antiques and stuff- you know the ones, from Notting Hill!!! Except I couldn't find the bookshop from the movie to have my Julia Roberts Hugh Grant moment. Then cos I was stuffed I went and saw a film- Memoirs of a Geisha. It was pretty good, I think the book was better of course, but the film was quite beautiful.
Um on Sunday I spent most of my time figuring out how to set up Skype. Then I rang up and booked a cheapo ticket to see Crique du Soleil's Alegria at the Royal Albert Hall. Everyone knows how Crique obsessed I am since I worked for them in 2004, so I was so excited to see the show. Plus the Royal Albert Hall was AMAZING!!! Such a beautiful building. Alegria was also excellent... I had a crap seat though, it was called "restricted view" for a reason. But it was only 22 pounds for the ticket and I really enjoyed the show and all. I love Cirque du Soleil!!!!
When I was walking back to the tube station it was such a nice night and people were iceskating outside the Natural History Museum. I will post a photo for you all, it was really pretty.
Anyway, must go and see radio lecturer and then go to Sainsbury's to get more food. The supermarkets here are soooooo good!! Sainsbury's makes Coles look totally crappy.
