Proof that pro-lifers are crazy

Sorry for my dismal blogging efforts as of late. But when I was flicking through either the Independent or Guardian on Saturday, can't remember which cos I read both, I was shocked to discover a picture of this: click at your own risk though I am sure the picture will have been seen everywhere soon enough.

For those that can't bear to look in case I have directed them towards something heathen and sinful, don't worry, the churchies are safe to go. It's just a sculpture depicting Britney Spears giving birth on a bearskin rug. Don't worry, it's very tasteful... no nasty stretch marks or anything in sight, we couldn't have a realistic representation of Britney's pregnant form. And the title should be enough to make the punters click the link... this piece of art is called "Monument to Pro-Life: The birth of Sean Preston". OK, gag now, yes I give you permission, cos I gag everytime I read that.

This is a clear sign that pro-lifers have gone nuts. First of all, did Britney ever consider abortion? I seem to recall her talking about her desire to have children in the goss mags in the lead up to her becoming preggers, so it's not really a story of triumph of pro-life over pro-choice or anything. Britney Spears giving birth really has nothing to do with the abortion movement at all. No more than any other woman willfully having a baby out of personal CHOICE. And, to top it all off, she is giving birth on a bearskin rug... anyone see the irony? A monument to protecting life which has as one of it's key componants a dead animal killed for human vanity and pretention? Well done crazy fundamentalists of southern USA, you have managed to demonstrate the hypocrisy and idiocy that makes the rest of the world mock you ever so much.

There is a classic quote on the website from the artist "She was number one with Google last year, with good reason --- people are inspired by the beauty of a pregnant woman"... well why is it an "idealized" version of Britney giving birth? Why wasn't reality goood enough? We all saw the pics on the trash mags, the Britstar got a bit wobbly like everyone else. And I bet with her popstar diva temperament, she wouldn't have been as serene in the labour as is depicted by this piece of art. Her body is sexualized and idealized and her choice to have a baby is turned in to some sort of twisted moralistic crap about pro-life as opposed to it being her personal choice. How long before some feminists deface the sculpture? A male artist as well, wow, there's something new, the female form being defined and objectified by the male gaze. Why don't they just put her in a beer ad or shampoo ad or something, it would be just as cheap and tacky.

End of extremely justified feminist pro-choice rant. You may think the sculpture represents the struggle between female perfection and tradition or nature and that would be a justifiable reading, but nothing can save this art from the trite title and overbearing moral lesson the pro-life movement has tried to attach to it. Ick, makes me feel ill.

This is an interesting alternate reading of the sculpture for anyone who is interested... don't ever say I push my views down your throats!
