RIP Croc Hunter

I'm so saddened by the news that Steve Irwin, AKA Crocodile Hunter, was killed by a Sting Ray. It's sad cos he has little kids and was pretty young, but it's also sad because he was such a great figurehead for the conservation movement.

I regarded his massive personality as all show when he first became popular, but I watched an Australian Story episode a few years ago where he was interviewed and I realized it was actually genuine. He was really compassionate about animals and also about Australia. Many Australians are very sad about this news as he was a true larrikin with the "no worries mate" adventurous personality and characters like that are harder and harder to come by these days. He never got political, and yeah he made a couple of slip ups, but he was only interested in using his fame to help save animals.

Hi Ash,

Many people here in England are sharing your sadness.

Probably the man which most personified Australia for me.

RIP Steve Irwin

Only 5 days ago I was watching an episode of South Park which satirised Steve Irwin spot on with Cartman's Australian accent and attempts to emulate him.
This was probably the first time people in Britain were brought to the attention of the hunter, having not appeared on television until around five years ago.

Although some of the stunts he did got out of hand at times I'd never imagine that he would be involved an accident so tragic in an activity not normally associated with him.

Definitley one of the most iconic Australian personalities of recent times.
