Lofty dreams
Last night I went to the Loft at uni for drinks after work and there ended up being a 2SER party there with free drinks and food and not that many people there to share them with, but it was good fun and a nice way to end the week after a busy time at work.
Afterwards Mel and I went down to the courtyard at UTS Housing and sat there in the balmy night next to the fountain and talked about how much we had changed since we last lived there, how UTS Housing had failed to meet our expectations in so many ways and how it was a pretty lonely place to exist sometimes. We talked about how its funny that we aren't that sad to leave a place (UTS) that has been the institution of which we have been a part of for three years, which really says something about the experience. Uni is supposed to be the best time of your life, and I got a taste of that on my exchange, and moving to Sydney has been fantastic in ways, but the structure of uni hasn't really been a structure that has induced a massive amount of fun and celebration. I've learnt a lot, but to be honest most of the learning has taken place outside of the classroom.
While I don't really have any regrets because my degree has gotten me where I want to head and I have met some awesome people and I got to go on exchange and stuff, I think UTS really provides a poor undergraduate experience compared to other unis and they need to look at that and try and fix it. The degrees are good, but the social life (particularly in housing for those who have moved away from home) is crap. Westminster wasn't anywhere near perfect either and the halls there could be pretty dull, but it was better than UTS.
